Now it's all about.....distractions

August 18, 2017

'I get distracted when I see a fit boy' said Olivia in this year's Love Island epic...the funniest line out of the series and very honest too...made me LOL, PMSL, ROTFL

Distractions, or is it avoidance or could it be procrastination? That thing that prevents someone from concentrating on something else, erm, sorry what was that again (in walks fit boy), I just searched for more cat GIFs, they’re so funny…….. OK so point taken! Summer holidays is a breeding ground for getting distracted, don't I know it!

So, is it distraction or that good old word, procrastination? Or both? When the s@#t hits the fan because a) Your assignment is late b) You are late c) Late becomes the new early, then are the cat GIFs going to save your bacon? ‘Sorry it’s late, but there was this really cute Tabby cat in a sink, who could turn the tap on and then couldn’t figure out why it was getting soaked…hilarious’! Probably not and then you have a problem.

So, in my search for writing a blog versus checking my Facebook page, looking at Twitter and resisting the temptation to use my new whizzy Appy thing that logs, styles and organises my clothes/wardrobe /life, I wonder if I am not alone in my thinking and actions when it comes to distractions. Surely this is the norm, right?!?

Apparently, it’s an ‘instant gratification’ or ‘hedonic pleasure’ that we fall for, the logical mind versus the monkey mind. So, how do we fix it? How do we decide to make decisions based on long term goals that may ultimately lead to a happier, more fulfilled and organised person, and turn these amazing creative ideas that never seem to see the light of day into a reality?

One theory is to forgive yourself and be kind to the person you are, not berate your actions and pour a lorry load of negative talk and empty it into your monkey mind, who will then want to go do something naughty! It’s a bit like that weird analogy that the things you love eating or drinking are usually the things we end up being allergic to, but we can’t get enough and somehow are slightly addicted. The monkey mind likes a bit of ‘instant gratification’ and when the push comes to the shove will monkey mind prefer a  Social Media distraction, or to sit and plan for a new career path? Or would monkey mind prefer cleaning the kitchen versus starting to organise a pending birthday event?

Another theory is to not think about it too much, you don’t have to be in the mood to do a task, job, chore or piece of work, ignore how you feel and get started. It works, try it….so if you haven’t got distracted half way through reading this blog, then you have done very well indeed, so can I ask you to do something for me, don’t think, do it….LIKE and SHARE my Blog, or even tag a friend  who may find this entertaining, or is painfully true to their situation or it may support them or even you?

On a final note,  if you have been thinking about your future or debating your present, but monkey mind keeps distracting you, then perhaps it’s time to pick up the phone or send an email to arrange a time for your FREE 30-minute consultation.
